The New iPhone + iOS4, and Apps.
I was looking forward to yesterday’s keynote as much as any Apple fan was. As I’ve been using a 2G iPhone without a Data Plan for the last two years, and knowing that I am going to upgrade no matter what they unveiled, I was especially looking forward to having Steve Jobs show me what my new phone. I was looking forward to information about HD Video, and quite importantly, Canadian Release Dates (which was disappointing news, to say the least). I was looking forward to the hardware upgrades the new newest piece of technology would give me.
I was not expecting to be so blown away by the software and Apps that were featured in Job’s Keynote, which are coming along with iOS4, and the new iPhone 4. Seriously, two cameras, two mics, ‘Retina Display’, special magic glass, blah blah blah. None of this really made me excited. However…
Guitar Hero for the iPhone? iBooks on the iPhone? iMovie on the iPhone? Wow. Now I’m excited.
I should not have been surprised at my own reaction. I mean *eyeroll* iPhone App Girl, right? Clearly I have a particular interest in software for this device.
But I was surprised, really surprised, about how very excited I was getting about iBooks in particular. I honestly have never thought of owning an eBook reader of any kind. In fact, it’s so rare that I purchase or read Actual Books that I did not think that I was the target demographic for this particular feature. Oh boy, I was way wrong, I’m the exact demographic. A user of multiple (soon, anyways, if I can find a store that actually has an iPad in stock) iOS Devices, already familiar with iTunes and App Store purchases – just poised to frivolously purchase eBooks.
If I can somehow manage not to spend all my time reading eBooks on my new iPhone, I know what I’ll be doing instead.
Video Editing. Oh yes. The 5 Megapixel camera officially out-ranks my actual point-and-shoot digital camera, and so the iPhone will become my primary photo taker. I do own (somewhere) a Mini-DV video camera that I got only a couple years ago, which I only ever used a few times, and now seems horribly out of date (tape, really, actual physical tape? Ick.).
I was already considering getting a Flip Mino HD, but now I don’t have to. Between the iPhone as a creation device, and if I can somehow run iMovie on an iPad for the video editing, I think that I would probably just start producing my own television show starring me and my cat. Mostly my cat.
So overall I really am looking forward to the new iPhone, but not for the reasons I was expecting to. I’m going to call it a Win. (And continue my quest for an iPad in the meantime).
